About Our Chapter

As the first women's fraternity founded in 1867, Pi Phi has a long history of lifelong sisterhood and philanthropic involvement. Here at UC San Diego, these values thrive in combination with the high standards for academics and great beach life! Our chapter calendar is filled with all sorts of fun activities to make our time at UCSD fun and meaningful. We dance the night away at fun-themed events, dominate the field in ISS sports, actively participate in community service, and host our annual philanthropy event Pi Beta Phi's Arrowspike. Pi Phi affords all members the opportunity to cultivate sincere friendships and memories that will last a lifetime! Our chapter has a very diverse group of girls who are campus leaders, athletes, scholars, artists, future doctors, lawyers and so much more. Though we are all different, we are united over a common love for Pi Beta Phi.

SISTERHOOD

Pi Phis at UCSD have a very close knit sisterhood. Our members can always be found spending time together, whether they are eating lunch in Price Center or enjoying a campus event. We have Geisel library takeovers where we spend all of our study hours, but we also love finding cute off-campus coffee shops together! We host lots of sisterhood events throughout the year such as catered dinners, spin classes, self-defense sisterhoods, pizza parties, girls' night, beach days, new member sleepovers, bonfires, picnics, and Padres' baseball games-- just to name a few!  Our members take sisterhood to the next level by living together, traveling the world together, going to music festivals together, and so much more. The friendships you make within Pi Phi are ones that truly last a lifetime!

 PHILANTHROPIC SERVICE

Philanthropic Service to Others is one of our six core values.  As Pi Phis, we hold ourselves to a very high standard in regards to giving back to the community.  Our annual philanthropy is Arrowspike.  In this competition, other Panhellenic chapters and Interfraternity council chapters participate in a beach volleyball competition at Pacific Beach. We host a stellar raffle and have multiple different sponsors set up tents with food and merchandise. This past year, we raised over $22,000 from our Arrowspike competition! That money was given directly to our philanthropies: Read > Lead > Achieve, an organization dedicated to ending illiteracy in the United States and the Pi Beta Phi foundation, which awards student scholarships.

Besides our annual Arrowspike philanthropy, Pi Phis at UCSD donate their time and service to a variety of other charities. Some of our members truly embody our value of Philanthropic Service to Others by starting their own clubs on campus like GreeksGoneGreen or ShesTheFirst! We also annually participate in San Diego's 5k Breast Cancer Walk, volunteer at San Diego Food Bank, and help out at Boys and Girls Club of Greater San Diego. Throughout the year, we further our support for our philanthropy by participating in our Champions are Readers program, or CAR for short. Through this program, we attend a local elementary school and assist the teachers with reading to the students.  Oftentimes, we work with a special needs class and read to the children or listen as they read to us!

PERSONAL & INTELLECTUAL GROWTH

Another one of our six core values is Personal and Intellectual Growth, in which Pi Phi is committed to helping their members achieve academic success. We show our members that it is important to live a life in balance by encouraging members to do well in all aspects of life, but also making academics a priority. We boast an array of scholars in all fields of study and provide tools to ensure their success. Members are offered academic support through tutoring and study hours, and rewarded for personal success through numerous academic incentive programs. At the end of the year, Pi Phi hosts an Academic Banquet to celebrate all the women who have worked hard throughout the school year to maintain academic excellence!

ALUMNAE RELATIONS

Our chapter has very close relations with local Pi Phi alumnae. Once a year, we host an Alumnae dinner, in which we invite local alumnae to share their stories, laugh, and of course, sing Ring Ching. The alumnae give speeches about their favorite college memories as a Pi Phi and how Pi Phi has impacted their lives even after college. In April, we celebrate our Founder's Day by celebrating with local alumnae as well as the Pi Beta Phi chapters at San Diego State University and University of San Diego. This event allows us to come together under the name of Pi Phi and share experiences, celebrate alumnae and collegians' achievements, and be proud to wear the wine and blue. In 2017, Pi Beta Phi celebrated our 150th anniversary as a premeir women's organization!
